Sharon schools need to have a culture and climate in which students can learn and succeed. Unfortunately, our students are not immune to the negative mental health trends affecting our nation. Bullying and related DEI issues are real and impacting our kids. I have consistently supported additional counselors for helping students address these issues. I would like to see regular progress reports on bullying and racial bias incidents and learning more about how we approach these situations.

In addition, I support teachers and administration who are  working towards improving our elementary literacy program. This is clearly an equity issue, as students who do not have the means to hire tutors may lose out if the reading curriculum is not appropriately reformed. The administration has developed a task force for evaluating the elementary literacy curriculum and I look forward to hearing regular reports on their progress.

The School Committee can and should support an improved mental health climate and outstanding literacy through our policy and/or budget power.

During my time on the SC, I have experienced three budget cycles, including two heavily influenced by COVID requirements and funding. All too often there is "too much month at the end of the money," as the song goes. Yet free full-day kindergarten and elementary Spanish are important programs that make our schools special. Whether it is student activity fees or negotiating teacher contracts, I will do my best to take every stakeholder's view into account and come up with reasonable solutions.

I am committed to maintaining honors levels in the middle school and high school. I am committed to maintaining honors levels in the middle school and high school. Our students must remain competitive, not just for college admissions (although that is absolutely important) but also for the project of learning itself. We are told that certain honors classes end up being more like a multi-level classroom because so many students choose to take honors. I think this is a good thing (in fact, I supported the ability of students to override a teacher recommendation and to take a more advanced class). An honors class should be an honors class. Clearly there are different views of what honors is, and I would like to continue the discussion while maintaining the highest academic standards.
